Construction to begin on NB Liquor
outlet at former train station
A sod-turning ceremony was held today to
begin construction of NB Liquor’s newest outlet on the site of the former
train station on York Street, Fredericton.
Finance Minister Greg Byrne, Environment
Minister Rick Miles, Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside and Stew Valcour,
vice-president, J.D. Irving Ltd., participated.
"This is an exciting project that will
restore the train station as an architectural centrepiece in the downtown –
a welcome
change from what the building looks like today," said Byrne, who is also
minister responsible for NB Liquor.
The outlet will cover 948 sq. m (about 10,200
sq. ft.) and will be linked to the existing 318-sq.-m (3,425-sq.-ft.) train
station
by an enclosed glass corridor. The outlet will open in late January or early
February 2011 and carry about 1,700 products.
The NB Liquor outlet on Smythe Street will close once the new store has
opened; all staff there will be transferred to the
new location.
"We are very pleased to have the approval of
Parks Canada – the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada – to
proceed with the construction of the new liquor store that will be attached
to the 1923 train station," said Valcour. "This
project will not only enhance the historic downtown; it will generate jobs
for up to 25 people during peak construction.
We continue to work with Parks Canada and our valued customer – NB Liquor –
about the interior design of the site. Today
we are focused on completing the construction and restoration of the train
station by the end of this year."
J.D. Irving Ltd. owns the property and is
responsible for all aspects of the construction. The company will also
construct a
new portion of the city walking trail from Sobeys to York Street. The
general contractor for the first phase of the work is Bird Construction Co.
in Saint John.
"This an exciting project for NB Liquor,"
said Dana Clendenning, president and chief executive officer, NB Liquor.
"The former
train station area will house about 300 specialty wine and spirits boutique
and feature NB Liquor’s first events kitchen, where
our product advisers will host product tastings, food and wine pairings and
education sessions."
NB Liquor will lease the refurbished train
station and the new structure under a 20-year lease. The location meets all
of the corporation’s key criteria, including a central and visible location,
ample customer parking, easy access, and improved
customer service to the downtown core.
"The York Street train station restoration
project has been a work in progress for the last three years," said Miles.
"I am happy
to see the construction phase for this important heritage building is about
to begin. Soon, it will be restored to its former glory
for Fredericton residents to enjoy."
"I would like to thank the Province of New
Brunswick, NB Liquor and J.D. Irving Ltd. for putting this package together
to bring
back to life this very important historical building of the city of
Fredericton," said Woodside.

NB Liquor announces two-year
financial commitment to MADD Canada
FREDERICTON (CNB) – NB Liquor announced
today that it will be making an investment during the next two years to
support multiple campaigns and programs by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)
Canada to stop impaired driving in New Brunswick.
“NB Liquor has shown true leadership in
promoting the anti-drinking and driving message to our youth,” said Premier
Shawn Graham. “New Brunswick was the first and only province to educate
young people in both official languages about the dangers of drinking and
driving through the high school assembly program.”
NB Liquor will be contributing a direct
investment of $200,000 and is committing to make an additional $162,000 to
MADD Canada and its New Brunswick chapters through in-store community
donation programs. The two year commitment also includes 50 per cent of
revenues from the sale of reusable bags.
The funding will be divided among
various programs, including the production and delivery of MADD Canada’s
multi-media assembly program to all English and French high schools in the
province.
“NB Liquor’s
contributions to the fight to stop impaired driving are significant,” said
Andy Murie, chief executive officer, MADD Canada. “From its social
responsibility programs and measures to prevent alcohol sales to minors, to
its very generous support of MADD Canada chapters and programs, NB Liquor is
a valued partner in the effort to prevent impaired driving in New
Brunswick.”
A community donation campaign begins
today, Wednesday, July 28, and runs until Saturday, July 31. Two previous
donation campaigns raised more than $74,000 from New Brunswickers for MADD
Canada’s high school multi-media programs and the New Brunswick chapter’s
911 programs. All funds donated through the corporation’s 127 coin boxes
located at cash lanes in the province are directed to MADD Canada. NB
Liquor’s social responsibility goal is to deliver 300,000 messages per year
to New Brunswickers.
NB Liquor and MADD Canada premiered the
French multi-media program Fini, in September 2009.
